Coaching a Growth Mindset

Eddie Jones and Chris Coleman – two coaches currently enjoying summer success – have both grounded their management in growth mindset philosophy. Following Wales’ greatest night of football against Belgium, Coleman said not being afraid to fail was key to his team’s victory:

“If you work hard enough and you’re not afraid to dream then you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. Everybody fails. I have had more failures than I’ve had success.”

Eddie Jones made reference to Carol Dweck’s Mindset during the recent summer tour in Australia. Jones said that it was his team’s commitment to learning and re-learning skills that helped them complete the whitewash against the Wallabies:

“The hardest thing to change is the mindset and we need to move to a growth mindset where they are happy to be challenged and try new things.”
