Why become an SLE?

As part of the local Dartmoor Teaching School Alliance our staff have the opportunity to apply to become Specialist Leaders in Education (SLEs). The deadline for the first recruitment window shuts in early June, so we thought we would tell you why we think being an SLE is a great step forward…

SLEs are normal, yet really effective middle or senior leaders. To become one, you need to have at least two years experience leading a team. A particular area of expertise and a track record of having an impact are also really important.

The benefits are many: you receive training in how to coach and support others, you become part of a wider network of like-minded leaders, plus you get to work with, learn from and share your expertise with colleagues in a range of other schools.

I took the step to become an SLE some years ago now, and never looked back. I learnt a great deal, not least giving me the confidence to step into a senior leadership post.
